My Dear Family in Christ;

       The Scripture readings are challenging because they call us to examine our fundamental preoccupation: the necessity of money to live in today’s world. Our nation and the whole western world is experiencing the pain that has effected a wider swath of people. We are based on the need to buy and consume that money stays in circulation.

In the readings that we read and hear for this the 18th Sunday money was rare and possessions consisted of land for survival for the majority. I should also like to point out that the readings are proclaimed to awaken us to the true priorities that matter.

      The opening words from the second reading offer us a guide on living, even, in our present world. “If you were raised with Christ, seek what is above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God....For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Col. 3: 1,4). We are to live with the new gift that was offered at baptism where we are to gaze, ultimately on what counts, our heavenly home.

      Money and possessions, in and of themselves, are not evil in our culture; we can’t manage without them. It is only when they become what we worship that reality is blurred.

May I suggest a simple exercise. Write on a piece of paper the ten things/values you can live without. After you have done this, number them as to their importance.

Stewardship Reflection

“Above all, let your love for one another be constant, for love covers a multitude of sins. Be mutually hospitable without complaining. As generous distributors of God’s manifold grace, put your gifts at the service of one another, each in the measure you have received.” (1 Peter 4:8-10)

If you have changed your phone number,
